Description
The story behind the Gothic church at Kylemore Abbey is as heartbreaking as the story of Kylemore Castle is beautiful. Built for the deceased wife of Kylemore's owner, the church features angel gargoyles as she didn't like scary things. Margaret Henry was the beloved wife of Mitchell Henry, the son of a wealthy Manchester cotton merchant who built Kylemore Castle as his dream home in 1871. Margaret tragically died soon after a while on a family holiday in Egypt, in 1874. She had fallen ill with dysentery and died within 16 days of contracting the disease aged only 45. Her remains were brought back to Kylemore and laid to rest in the Mausoleum on the grounds. Mitchell wanted to show his love for late, in a way that would last through time. img139 462
